List of schools, businesses, and local governments impacted by Debby (2024)

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Below is a list of local schools and businesses that will be closed due to Hurricane Debby.

APPLING COUNTY:

An official with the Appling County School System says the school system will be closed for students and staff Monday, August 5 and Tuesday, August 6.

BACON COUNTY:

Bacon County Schools will be closed for students and staff Monday, August 5 and Tuesday, August 6.

BEAUFORT COUNTY:

Beaufort County Schools will be closed for the remainder of Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The district says they will reassess facilities on Wednesday to make a determination regarding whether or not school will be open Thursday.

The University of South Carolina Beaufort campuses in Bluffton, Beaufort and Hilton Head Island will be closed Tuesday 8/6 and Wednesday 8/7 for Tropical Storm Debby.

BENIDICTINE MILTARY SCHOOL:

Benedictine announced that Monday, August 5 will be a half day. Benedictine will close the campus at 3:00 p.m. They plan to have asynchronous learning through Wednesday, and likely Thursday depending on storm conditions. They plan to resume in-person classes Friday.

BRYAN COUNTY:

Bryan County Schools will be closed on Monday, August 5 and Tuesday, August 6th.

All sporting events and afterschool activities will also be canceled for Monday. Officials will monitor the storm and make a determination about returning to school on Tuesday by 1 p.m. Monday.

BULLOCH COUNTY: Bulloch County Schools will close Monday and Tuesday for employees and students due to Hurricane Debby. All athletics and after school events are also cancelled. They will determine a schedule for Wednesday based on storm conditions. Wednesday’s plan will be announced at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday.

CHATHAM COUNTY:

Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools will have early dismissal on Monday, August 5. The school system will be closed Tuesday, August 6 and Wednesday, August 7.

FIRST CHRISTIAN ACADEMY:

First Christian Academy in Richmond Hill will be closed Monday, August 5 and Tuesday, August 6.

GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY:

Georgia Southern University plans to reduce operations on Monday, Aug. 5 due to Hurricane Debby:

  • Monday, Aug. 5 at 12 p.m. - Armstrong Campus in Savannah and the Liberty Campus
  • Monday, Aug. 5 at 5 p.m. - Statesboro Campus

The University plans to return to normal operations Thursday, Aug. 8 pending storm conditions.

JEFF DAVIS COUNTY:

Jeff Davis County school system will be closed for students and staff Monday, August 5 and Tuesday, August 6.

LIBERTY COUNTY:

Liberty County will delay the first day of school until Thursday, August 8. All Liberty County School System twelve-month employees and critical workers should report to work on Monday, August 5.

LONG COUNTY:

According to Long County Superintendent David Edwards, Long County Schools will delay the first day of school due to Debby.

Edwards said the storm is expected to impact the area with heavy rainfall.

Long County schools will be delayed until Thursday, August 8th.

Additional delays may occur based on conditions of dirt roads, power outages, and property damage.

Edwards said school and district offices will be closed through Wednesday.

MEMORIAL DAY SCHOOL AND CHILDCARE CENTER:

Memorial Day School & Memorial Child Care Center are closed completely Monday-Wednesday. The first day of school is for 8:00 a.m. Thursday.

SAVANNAH STATE UNIVERSITY:

SSU announced that all general campus operations will be suspended Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday is set to be a planned telework day. They say that emergency personal should follow guidance from their respective area leaders.

SAVANNAH TECH:

Savannah Tech classes will be canceled and campuses will close at 3 p.m. on Monday, August 5 and will remain closed/canceled on Tuesday, August 6 and Wednesday, August 7. While the College will be closed for in-person activities, certain staff, who are designated by their immediate supervisor, may be required to report to work during this closure.

TATTNALL COUNTY:

Schools will be closed Monday, August 5 and Tuesday, August 6.

WAYNE COUNTY:

Monday, August 5, all schools and offices will be closed. No system employees are required to report to work.

Tuesday, August 6: Weather permitting, and if travel is safe, district and school administrators are to report to work. Further guidance will be provided by the superintendent.

Wednesday, August 7: Open House for all schools will be held from 3:30 PM to 6:00 PM.

Thursday, August 8: The first day of school for students.

Officials say this schedule may change based on local road conditions, power outages, and potential damage to school property. Any necessary updates will be communicated through our usual channels.

The Children’s Village

The Children’s Village in Richmond Hill will be closed Monday, August 5.

SCREVEN COUNTY SCHOOLS:

Screven County Schools will be closed Tuesday, August 6th, 2024 due to possible weather conditions.

BUSINESSES:

Chatham Area Transit: CAT plans to remove all electric vehicles out of service until the storm passes over.

They encourage riders to turn on their social media or text alerts for any additional service changes.

As of 4:30 p.m. Monday, all CAT services are suspended due to the Tornado Warning.

Ralph H. Johnson VA Centers: In preparation for Tropical Storm Debby, the Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System is currently operating on the following schedule for Monday, August 5th through Thursday, August 8th. The VA Medical Center’s inpatient care units and Emergency Department will remain open and operational.

The following are outpatient closures, with virtual care options available (as of August 4):

  • Hinesville, GA VA Clinic – Closed
  • Savannah, GA VA Clinic – Closed
  • Beaufort VA Clinic – Closed

STATUS FOR TUESDAY, AUGUST 6:

  • Hinesville, GA VA Clinic – Closed
  • Savannah, GA VA Clinic – Closed
  • Beaufort VA Clinic – Closed

STATUS FOR WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7:

  • Hinesville, GA VA Clinic – Open (Normal Operations)
  • Savannah, GA VA Clinic – Open (Normal Operations)
  • Beaufort VA Clinic – Open (Normal Operations)

STATUS FOR THURSDAY, AUGUST 8:

  • Hinesville, GA VA Clinic – Open (Normal Operations)
  • Savannah, GA VA Clinic – Open (Normal Operations)
  • Beaufort VA Clinic – Open (Normal Operations)

Clinical staff members are currently contacting patients with appointments during the closures to offer virtual care appointments or to reschedule in person appointments.

Coastal Health District: In preparation for Hurricane Debby all clinics and offices of the Coastal Health District plan to close at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5, and re-open at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8.

Departments in: Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long, and McIntosh Counties will be closed.

They ask anyone with a clinic appointment to reschedule for a later date.

WTOC will continue to update this list when more information becomes available.

South Coast Health: South coast health announced that for the safety of their patients and staff, ALL SouthCoast Health offices will be closed on Tuesday, August 6 due to Hurricane Debby.

The City of Richmond Hill:

Richmond Hill residents can find information about: yard waste and garbage collection; parking restrictions; storm updates; city office closures; hurricane preparedness tips here.

Administrative offices will be closed 3 p.m. Monday.

City of Savannah government offices: the City of Savannah will close all government offices Tuesday. The city’s essential emergency functions will still be open during Debby. Services open will include: safety, water and sewer, stormwater, park and tree, and traffic engineering. These services will remain open as weather permits.

Offices will stay open Monday and a decision is yet to be made about whether office will be open Wednesday.

The following City services will be impacted on Tuesday, Aug. 6:

  • All non-emergency essential City government offices will be closed.
  • In-person payments at the Coastal Georgia Center for utility, tax, license, and other fees will be closed.
  • Street cleaning night services will be suspended.
  • The Dean Forest Landfill and Bacon Park Convenience Center will be closed.
  • Sanitation routes will shift to a modified schedule on Wednesday.
  • Recorder’s Court will be closed.
  • In-person services with the Office of Special Events, Film, and Tourism will be suspended.
  • Building closures, including all services within, will include City Hall, Civic Center, Community Centers, Cultural Arts Center, Floyd Adams City Services Complex, Savannah Municipal Services Annex and the Savannah Entrepreneurial Center.

Bluffton Satellite Voter Registration Office:

The Board of Voter Registration and Elections of Beaufort County satellite office in Bluffton located at the Myrtle Park Government Center, 4819 Bluffton Parkway announced that they will be CLOSED Wednesday, August 7, 2024, due to storms.

The Town of Bluffton:

  • Bluffton government offices will be closed to the public Tuesday and Wednesday. Employees will be working from home.
  • Bluffton Municipal Court is cancelled Tuesday, August 6th.
  • Waste and Recycling routes will NOT be servicing Monday or Tuesday.

Palmetto Breeze Services:

Lowcountry Palmetto Breeze will suspend all transportation services Monday at 8 p.m. They will have no services Tuesday, August 6th.

Savannah Children’s Theatre:

Savannah Children’s Theatre will be closed Monday and Tuesday, August 5th and 6th. They said Beauty and the Beast auditions have been postponed to Friday, August 16th at 7pm and Saturday, August 17th at 1pm. Click here for more information.

Live Oak Public Libraries:

Live Oak Public Libraries announced that all 16 branches will close Monday at noon due to Debby.

The Savannah location will be closed Tuesday, August 6th and Wednesday, August 7th. Branches are expected to reopen at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 8th and plan to resume normal programs and services.
